Heart disease can progress insidiously in cats and dogs

To ensure our pets lead healthy and happy lives, we must pay close attention to their heart health. Heart diseases, just like in humans, can occur in pets as well, but they can be managed with early diagnosis and proper care. In both cats and dogs, these conditions can progress insidiously, and it can be difficult to notice early signs. Therefore, as a responsible pet owner, it is crucial to know the steps you can take to protect your pet’s heart health.

The main causes of heart disease:

Heart diseases can result from various causes, such as genetic predisposition, aging, nutritional imbalances, and infections. The most common heart disease in cats is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition characterized by thickening of the heart muscle that makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood. In dogs, mitral valve disease and dilated cardiomyopathy are more common, typically involving issues such as malfunctioning heart valves or the heart enlarging and weakening. These conditions can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and fainting over time.

If You Notice These Symptoms, See a Veterinarian

Heart disease presents with symptoms such as rapid fatigue, coughing (more common in dogs), reluctance to move, difficulty breathing, fainting or loss of consciousness, and swelling in the abdominal area (due to fluid buildup). If you notice any of these symptoms, you should consult a veterinarian immediately.
