Cats are among the animals that receive a great deal of attention from people. Because of their unique characteristics, a great deal of research is conducted on cats. One of the topics people are curious about is why these adorable creatures dislike water.

Most cats don’t like getting wet. However, when they see water running from the faucet, they may come running to you excitedly to drink it. So why this contradiction?

Reasons Why Cats Don’t Like Bathing

Cat owners may sometimes want to give their little friends a bath. However, many cats hate this, and some even disappear as soon as they hear the sound of running water.
There is no single reason for this reaction to water, but there are some scientific and behavioral explanations:

Traditions Passed Down from Our Ancestors

Thousands of years ago, the ancestors of cats typically lived in arid regions. They used water only for drinking and never went into the water. This may have led them to develop a natural aversion to water.

Sensitivity to Odors

Cats are extremely sensitive to smells. The chemical odors in tap water or the scent of shampoo can bother them.

Wet Feathers

Cats have thick, dense fur. When it gets wet, it becomes heavy, and the cat’s mobility decreases. In the wild, this leaves them vulnerable to predators.

Don’t All Cats Love Water?

Although the general belief is that cats don’t like water, this isn’t true for every cat.
Some cats love to play with water; they love catching the water flowing from the faucet with their paws. This is entirely a matter of personality and experience.
Kittens that have a positive experience with water when they are young may be more comfortable around water as adults.

Result

There are both evolutionary and physical reasons why cats don’t like water. However, this doesn’t mean that every cat will react the same way.
Get to know your pet’s personality, respect its attitude toward water, and tailor its grooming needs accordingly.
